The first inaugural function of SATKAL was organized at Punjab University, Chandigarh on 11 December, 2000 by the founder President Mr. A.R. Sethi. Professor Jagindar Singh Ramdev attended this inaugural function. He shared his views and experiences of his life in India and USA, and also the idea of installation of the SATKAL Trust. In this function the stalwarts in the field of librarianship Prof. Girja Kumar, Prof. P.N. Kaula, Prof. P.B. Mangla, Dr. D.R. Kalia, Prof. Krishan Kumar, Prof. M.M. Kayshap, Dr. R.G. Prashar, Prof. J.L. Sardana graced the occasion and were felicitated. Eminent librarians from northwest region Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jammu, Patiala and other places also participated in the function. Prof. G.S. Randhawa, former Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar inaugurated the function and expressed concern over the economic conditions of the universities and its impact on the libraries in particular. He felt that the institutions need to generate their own resources for their sustenance. Mr. A.R. Sethi welcomed the guests and elaborated the functions of the SATKAL. Prof. P.N. Kaula in his inaugural lecture provided 'An Overview of Punjab Library Movement'. He also underlined the importance of IT and the growth of Networks in India. Lecture cum Panel discussion on "Punjab Librarianship-Celebrating success, Confronting Challenges" was held. There was an open discussion anchored by Prof. P.B. Mangla wherein the librarians and professionals touched the pertinent issues of librarianship. Prof. H.R. Chopra proposed a vote of thanks. The recipients of the SATKAL awards for the year 2000 were:

The Ranganathan Quiz was also organized for students of Library and Information Science where in the teams from the north-western region participated. It was compered Dr. M.P. Satija and the team from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar won the quiz running trophy. The following two books were released:
1. Information Management and other studies: Essays in honour of Dr. (Ms) K. Navlani. Volumes edited by Ashu Shokeen and others.
2. Exercises in the 19th Edition of Dewey Decimal Classification by Dr. M.P.Satija.
This book was dedicated by Dr. M.P. Satija to the Satinder Kaur Ramdev Memorial Trust for Advancement of Librarianship (SATKAL) and its founder Patron S. Jagindar Singh Ramdev, first Deputy Librian of Punjab University Library,Chandigarh.
